Sandor Eles (Gottfried)

Although Herr Kapitan Helmut Gottfried of the Luftwaffe commands the German raiding party that takes over the St. Oswald Naval Station in 1940, he can hardly be described as a traditional military man.

He might bark orders at his surly subordinates but in suprisingly honest conversations with his British counterpart, Commander Traynor, he reveals that he is really a man of science and sees the war merely as a means to an end. He plays on the Commander's own quest for knowledge as he attempts to discover the secret of the naval station's research.

Sandor Eles was born in Budapest, Hungary on 15th June 1936. His European background meant he was usually cast in more exotic role and although his career reflects a large international canon of both film and television, British viewers are probably more familiar with him through his role as Paul Ross, the suave maitre de at Crossroads Motel during the early eighties. He died of a heart attack in September 2002.
